I’m Dr. Maya Cobb, a licensed therapist and PhD-trained clinician whose research and clinical work focus on self-worth, the “Good Girl” archetype, and her evolution into the Strong Black Woman. My dissertation explored how early socialization, parenting practices, cultural expectations, and faith-based messages often teach Black girls to equate worth with obedience, emotional restraint, and resilience—setting the stage for adulthood patterns rooted in self-abandonment rather than authenticity.
I’m also a self-proclaimed Good Girl myself. My own healing deepened when I began building an intentional relationship with my inner child—learning to listen to her needs, honor her emotions, and redefine strength as something that includes rest, boundaries, and softness. That work didn’t just change how I showed up in relationships—it reshaped my understanding of self-worth.
Through my research, I highlight how low self-worth functions as an underlying driver of many mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, perfectionism, burnout, and relational distress. Rather than viewing symptoms in isolation, my work centers the idea that healing begins when we address the belief systems formed in childhood and reinforced across generations.
Faith supports women who have spent their lives being dependable, resilient, and faithful—often at the cost of their own needs. Trained in the Good Girl Framework, she helps Black women explore how religious teachings, cultural expectations, and generational survival have shaped the “Strong Black Woman” role, and guides them toward a relationship with faith that allows rest, boundaries, and authenticity.
